All About Chronic Bronchitis

We all disregard bronchitis thinking it’s just a cough, but did you know chronic bronchitis kills more than 120,000 people every year? Fewer people have died due to car crashes in comparison to the bronchitis disease.

So what is chronic bronchitis?

Bronchitis is two types- acute or chronic. While acute bronchitis is cured within a few days, chronic bronchitis is quite serious and develops over time and last for a few months or even for a couple of years.

Chronic bronchitis or Chronic Bronchitis Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is defined as persistent coughing that can last up to three months to a year or more. It’s caused due to excessive inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which are responsible for carrying the air to and from the lungs.

People with the bronchitis disease suffer from unremitting, coughing that results in thick and discolored mucus along with wheezing, chest pain, and shortness of breath.

What Are the Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis?

On severe inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes, chronic bronchitis will show symptoms such as constant heavy coughing with thick yellow, green, or white mucus.  Eventually, the mucus in the lungs builds up and restricts the airflow, causing shortness of breath.

Other symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Chest pain
  • Sinus blockage
  • Blue skin & lips
  • Swelling of legs

The regular swelling of the lining of the bronchial tube results in an extreme amount of mucus that blocks the airways, restricting the airflow going in and out of the lungs. Over the time, the blocked airflow gets worse and heightens difficulty in breathing and increases production of mucus in the lungs. Oftentimes, people who are living with chronic bronchitis develop emphysema. When combined with chronic bronchitis, results in  chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.

Prevention and Home Remedies for chronic bronchitis

As the COPD takes quite some time to develop, many people often mistake it as acute bronchitis and don’t consider it life threatening. Even though chronic bronchitis can’t be cured completely, certain lifestyle changes and natural remedies do help.

  • Get a humidifier for the house. The warm and moist air from an air humidifier will ease the coughing and release the mucus in the airways.
  • In case you’re a smoker, make sure you quit the habit immediately.Severe lung damage can occur when you inhale cigarette smoke over an extended period.
  • If you live in a polluted city, consider wearing a mask while you go out.
  • Start exercising regularly as physical activities help with strengthening the muscles that help in breathing.
  • Avoid irritants such as paints, toxic fumes, and dust.
  • Purse your lips when you’re experiencing difficulty in breathing. It’ll regulate the breath and help in dealing with shortness of breath.

How to treat chronic bronchitis naturally?

In recent times, Salt therapy is considered to be one of the most effective treatments for chronic bronchitis. As salt is antibacterial, it effectively kills the bacteria and reduces inflammation in the airways. Additionally, salt is even mucolytic which helps in displacing the excess mucus.
